          Joyce and Mindy receive award

Joyce Koppelman has been volunteering for charities and community organizations since moving to Escondido to "retire"

in 1988.   SRX Pets, The Joslyn Senior Center, American Legion Post 149 Women's Auxiliary, OENG, Interfaith Community

Services, Patio Playhouse and THEATRX are among the many groups that benefit from Joyce's generous volunteer efforts.

There have been many folks that Joyce has helped throughout the years but she feels that her visits to Ivy are the most rewarding.

Ivy Kensinger was 19 when she was critically injured in a December 2003 car accident. She has been the critical care unit at

Palomar Medical Center, bedridden and on a ventilator ever since.

A nurse in the unit contacted SRX Pets, which provides visits by pet dogs to patients in Palomar Pomerado Health facilities,

about arranging a visit for Ivy.  Joyce was asked to visit Ivy with Mindy, her year-old Chihuahua.  Joyce and Mindy have been

visiting Ivy twice a week ever since

Ivy is still unable to speak; she dictated a letter, with her mother reading her lips, to nominate Joyce for an Escondido City Council

award.   Joyce has been nominated several times over the years for an award and we congratulate you on your much earned

recognition.
